MIKE STURLA

A Proven Leader for Lancaster County

Mike Sturla has represented the 96th District in the State House of Representatives since 1991 and is now the longest-tenured Democrat to ever serve from Lancaster County.

That's not a coincidence. During his time in office, Mike has established himself as a tireless advocate for critical issues like education, healthcare, and the environment.

Mike was an original sponsor of the 'Cover All Kids' legislation to ensure every child has access to quality healthcare. The program was a runaway success and served as the nationwide model for what is now CHIP. Many of the policy achievements we tend to take for granted are the result of Mike Sturla fighting in the trenches for the people of Pennsylvania.

Born and raised in Lancaster, Mike has deep roots in the community and has never forgotten where he came from or the passion that led him to public service. He is a graduate of Garden Spot High School and the University of Kansas, where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Design. Mike currently serves as the Majority Chair of the House Housing & Community Development Committee. He also serves as Co-Chair of the Basic Education Funding Commission, which is tasked with recommending changes to the unconstitutional methods currently used to fund basic education in Pennsylvania

Outside of his work in the State Capitol, Mike continues to work hard to improve the lives of his constituents. One of his most joyful accomplishments is his "Back to School" event. With its 13th year occurring in 2024, the celebration of learning and community includes free backpacks, school supplies, books, school uniforms, sneakers, barber and hairdresser services, and more to any student in the community as they head back to school for a new year.

Mike and Tracy, his wife, live in Lancaster City. He has a son (Pete), a daughter (Cate), two step-daughters (Brea and Corinn), and four grandchildren.
